Promising Folk Singer Taylor Mitchell Killed by Coyotes While Out Hiking
Canadian singer-songwriter Taylor Mitchell, 19, was taking a short break from her first major concert tour in Cape Breton park, Nova Scotia, when the unthinkable happened. She was hiking alone on the Skyline trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park on Tuesday when she was attacked by two coyotes, typically shy creatures around humans. Other hikers walking behind her heard her frantic cries for help and called 911. A ranger shot and wounded one of the animals.
She was airlifted to hospital in Halifax, listed in critical condition, but she succumbed to her injuries early this morning. Mitchell, 19, was considered a rising star of the folk music scene, having just earned a Canadian Folk Music Awards nomination. She released her debut album, For Your Consideration, in March and began her first major tour a few weeks ago.
The trail was closed while officers hunted the coyotes, said Germaine LeMoine, public affairs officer with Parks Canada. One coyote was killed overnight; the hunt for the second continues.
